Life’s journey: embracing every step

By a contributor

A true, anonymous story of growth, heartbreak, and finding meaning in the journey—a contributor’s quiet testimony to resilience, shared to comfort and inspire others. Some stories are not just told—they are lived, felt, and quietly carried in the heart for years before being shared. This deeply moving account, offered by one of our contributors, is one such story. Rooted in real experiences, it traces a life shaped by dreams, setbacks, silent battles, and hard-won triumphs.

The author generously reveals their journey through education, heartbreak, and self-discovery. However, they feel uncomfortable disclosing their identity—understandably so, given the intimate nature of what they recount. Out of respect for that wish, we are withholding their name. But commit no mistake: this constitutes a true story, and its honesty speaks louder than any signature could. It offers a quiet testament to resilience, to evolving dreams, and to the courage of embracing every uncertain step in life’s ever-unfolding journey.

My life has been and continues to be, full of doubts. Growing up, I believed there was a clear ‘destination‘—a point B to strive toward, just like a traveller moving from point A to point B. Yet, as time passed, I found myself constantly reflecting on the past, grappling with uncertainties about the future. I sometimes wonder if this way of thinking is normal. Perhaps it’s not unusual—after all, many of us worry about the unknowns ahead, even though the future remains stubbornly unpredictable.

In the 1990s, when I was in primary school, I vividly remember my dreams. Back then, my only goal was to progress to secondary school—a big achievement considering the low pass rates. Secondary education was highly competitive, and my parents, especially my father, encouraged me relentlessly from my first year in primary school. I remember those evenings when he taught me to read and write with charcoal, and sometimes with small pieces of chalk he would get from teachers. Their support paid off, and I succeeded in the primary leaving exams.

The excitement of joining secondary school was immense. I felt that my future held limitless possibilities, and I vowed to work hard to reach university. Most of my teachers had completed secondary school, while a few were fresh university graduates or even university students. I aspired to follow the latter’s footsteps, even though finding a job after secondary education was almost guaranteed at that time.

My country, Rwanda, was in a phase of rebuilding after the Genocide against the Tutsi, which took place in 1994.  The economy had been severely devastated, leaving a pressing need for human resources across all sectors. To address these shortages, Rwanda prioritised the development of human capital, placing a strong focus on education and training to rebuild its workforce.

I was determined to go further as I believed that a university degree held the promise of a better life. Throughout my six years in secondary school, I aimed to be among the top five students. My ambition to attend university grew even stronger when my elder brother began his studies there. I would visit him, marvelling at what seemed like a luxurious and independent life—eating meals like meat and chips and sleeping in private rooms rather than dormitories. That vision of university life fuelled my determination, and I eventually achieved a top-three rank in the national exams in my class, securing my place at university. It felt like my dream was taking shape.

In my mind, I had painted a clear picture of what my ‘destination‘ looked like: university graduation, a rewarding job, a home, a marriage, and a family. I imagined this as the endpoint of my journey, not yet realising what each of these milestones would truly demand. I didn’t fully grasp the challenges that lay ahead, nor the lessons they would bring.

At university, I watched as some students were recruited by employers even before graduation. I assumed my journey would follow a similar path. But when I graduated, the situation/reality had changed. Many university graduates were looking for jobs. I had to face the harsh reality of job hunting—applications, written tests, and interviews. It wasn’t as smooth as I had envisioned. Disappointments crept in, yet I pushed on, keeping my dream alive.

The most difficult setback, however, was a heartbreak during my final year at university. After six years together, for some reason, my girlfriend and I ended our relationship. Our families knew each other, and we had shared plans and dreams for the future. I believed she was the love of my life, and I even told her that I would remain by her side no matter what. When it ended, the pain was profound, and adjusting to life without her was a struggle. I felt utterly devastated and consumed by depression. I remember those sleepless nights filled with endless inner dialogues, asking myself thousands of questions and wondering whether I would ever be able to envision building a family. Hearing stories of how she was also struggling to cope with the separation only amplified my feelings, worsening and deepening my agony. However, I had no choice but to keep moving.

Eventually, I found a ‘better’ job, regaining confidence in myself and my dreams. I continued the journey, one that was filled with more challenges and surprises than I had anticipated. Yet, slowly, I reached many of my goals: building a home, getting married, and having children. But even as I accomplished what I once considered my destination, I never stopped worrying about the future. Looking back, I realise that my vision of life back then didn’t include the complexities of a family, the trials of raising children, the dynamics of a partnership, or worrying about job security, among others.

Now, I see the world through different eyes and lenses. I observe people around me—some living lives of apparent success, others facing struggles, both visible and invisible to the outside world. Global crises like COVID-19 brought unprecedented realities, such as lockdowns and economic downturns, leading to job losses and rising unemployment rates. These factors added another layer of uncertainty. I find myself asking tough questions: what if my job ends tomorrow? How would I support my family, pay for my children’s education, and keep everything together?

Every day feels like the beginning of a new journey, even as it is also a continuation of what has come before. The future remains uncertain, and much of it lies beyond my control. But I’ve learned that with each worry comes a new resolve—to work harder, to be better prepared. I’ve come to understand that life is, indeed, an endless journey. There is no fixed destination, no final resting place for our dreams. If such a place exists, no one can truly define it. So, I’ve learned to cherish every step—whether it’s a moment of triumph or a lesson in failure—and to keep moving forward.

Overall, reflecting on my journey is helpful in terms of inspiring me to move forward and confront uncertainties. However, this process also brings me back to the ‘sad‘ realities, vividly resurrecting them in my memory and prompting me to question why things unfolded the way they did. Additionally, I find myself wondering what the others, who are indirectly involved or mentioned in my story, would think if they were to read it.

Pervasive truth, universal lessons and call to action

Life rarely unfolds the way we imagine it in our youth—which constitutes a universal truth. The straight paths we once envisioned often become winding roads filled with unexpected turns—some joyful, others painful. Yet, it is within those twists and turns that we grow, adapt, and discover what truly matters. The author of this story reminds us that while our dreams may evolve and our plans may falter, our ability to persevere, reflect, and keep moving forward is what defines us. Their journey is not just a personal testimony; it represents a mirror of what so many quietly endure, and a gentle reminder that we are not alone in our uncertainties.

Lessons anyone can draw from this account

  1. Life is not a straight line — our expectations often differ from reality, but that doesn’t make our journey any less meaningful.
  2. Dreams evolve — what we once saw as the final goal may become just one chapter in a much longer story.
  3. Pain doesn’t mean the end — even deep heartbreak or setbacks can eventually give way to healing and new beginnings.
  4. Uncertainty is part of life — instead of fearing uncertainty, we can prepare, adapt, and keep moving forward.
  5. Progress looks different for everyone — success isn’t always visible, and comparison often overlooks inner struggles.
  6. You are not alone — several people silently experience similar fears, doubts, and disappointments.
  7. Sharing helps heal — reflecting on our journey—whether privately or with others—can bring clarity and emotional growth.
  8. Empathy matters — we should never assume we know what someone else is going through.
  9. Every step counts — even small moments of effort, resilience, or clarity are worth celebrating.
  10. There is strength in vulnerability — choosing to be honest, even anonymously, is a courageous act that connects us all.
