Did you know Elon Musk’s journey is defined more by his extreme adversities than by his monumental successes?

Elon Reeve Musk is one of the most formidable people that this world boasts. “Musk is an incredibly hard worker, and he has visions for new ways of doing things that most people wouldn’t even be able to imagine. All of this is amazing,” confirms Entrepreneur in its 25 May 2018 story.

In most cases, people only view successful people from the lenses of the current position where they stand.  Thus, people tend to forget the successful personalities’ past adversities while it is the latter ones which have contributed enormously for them to amass their gigantic successes. Entrepreneur also affirms the point. “But like many people who have great success, what you don’t see behind it all is the amazing string of failures that brought him there.” Life In Humanity has been curious to know Musk’s hardships and how they have strengthened him to shape his character. This edition intends to respond to these questions.

“Elon Musk faced significant adversity in the form of bullying and family struggles that tested his resilience. During his school years, Musk became a target for bullies. He recalls a particularly harrowing incident in the eighth or ninth grade when a group of boys attacked him,” says Medium in its 22 February 2024. Yahoo Finance echoes it, saying “Elon Musk was bullied and tormented as a kid for being ‘the youngest and smallest guy (at school)’.”

Musk had never thought that huge success would happen to him. In other words, Musk, at some point in his life, did not anticipate that he would achieve the significant level of success that he eventually did. After graduating, Musk failed to secure a stable job. In interviews, Musk has expressed that his chief motivation was just to solve problems and advance humanity, especially in areas like renewable energy and space exploration, rather than simply becoming wealthy. He has declared that his ventures, such as SpaceX and Tesla, were high-risk and that he didn’t expect them to flourish as massively as they did.

However, through perseverance, bold decisions, and innovation, Musk eventually attained far more than what he might have originally imagined. His success has been inspired by his hurdles including the lack of a quality job. India Times reports “Did you know that young Elon Musk was rejected for a role at an internet company in the 90s? Also, were you aware of the fact that he was rejected for a role at Netscape which eventually led him to start Zip2 – the web software company which was the reason behind his success in becoming a millionaire?

However, he did not get the job and so, he started his own Internet company named Zip2 since ‘he wasn’t able to get a job anywhere,’ explained the Twitter user. The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk, is now the richest man in the world. However, before he became the king of the technology world, he was working odd jobs as he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do in life.”

In 2012, Musk himself told the entrepreneur and investor Kevin Rose  “I actually wasn’t sure what I wanted to do growing up. I thought inventing stuff or creating things would be a cool thing to do. But I wasn’t really sure if that meant starting a company or whether that meant working for a company that made cool stuff.”

Since Musk initially harbored no idea of establishing a company, he first focused on pursuing a job in the mentioned business. “I wouldn’t actually try to start a company, I’d try to get a job at Netscape.”

A unanimously agreed point is Musk is now the wealthiest person in the world. Nevertheless, pieces of information around his overwhelming net worth diverge. There are some sources stating that his network amounts to more than $231 billion. In its 6 August 2024 article, BBC says “Bloomberg ranks him as the world’s richest person, estimating his net worth to be around $228bn.” Yahoo Finance in its Jul 11, 2024 story reports “Musk’s net worth soared to $274 billion after Tesla stock’s 10-day stock win streak.” If this divergence is due to the time when the stories were produced, especially because net worth fluctuates from time to time, remains unknown to Life In Humanity.

Musk is recognized as an absolute mind with incredible ideas. The Entrepreneur in its aforesaid story states “His successes are ballyhooed around the world but so are his spectacular failures. Neither defines him near as much as his relentless unstoppability.”

PayPal being initially voted as one of the worst business concepts of the year, Tesla failed intensely before it turned profitable, complicated personal life and finances, failed launch of Space X, and failure of Hyperloop are some other intense hurdles which have battered Musk. For example about Paypal on 20 May 2011 CBS News reported “The first PayPal product was voted one of the 10 worst business ideas in 1999.”

Further details on Musk’s difficulties

Musk recounted hardships that he experienced growing up in a 2011 awards ceremony held by the Churchill Club. “I had a terrible upbringing. I had a lot of adversity growing up.” Yahoo Finance says that Musk’s ex-wife Justine Wilson reportedly narrated in a Goalcast YouTube video that other kids liked to follow him home from school and throw soda cans at his head.

“Despite these hardships, Musk found solace and strength with his family. Wilson revealed that Musk’s family cultivated a ‘mental escape’ by ‘talking about themselves as a special family that could do anything,’ according to Business Insider. This sense of familial support and self-belief was instrumental in Musk’s ability to survive and thrive amid adversity.

Musk’s journey from selling his first company, Zip2, for over $300 million in 1999 to spearheading groundbreaking ventures like Space X and Tesla is a testament to his visionary outlook and unwavering ambition. Yet, it’s his reflection on the importance of adversity that offers a deeper insight into his character.”

Musk acquired a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. While chasing a job, he was pursuing a graduate degree at Stanford. Nevertheless, all this excited nobody at Netscape, according to CNBC. He narrated to Rose “I didn’t get any reply.” “I mean I had a physics and economics degree, or physics and business degree from Wharton, and I was doing grad studies in applied physics and materials science. I guess that… I didn’t have a computer science degree or several years working at a software company.”

Even though he didn’t obtain a response, he persisted in seeking a job from this company. “I actually tried hanging out in the [Netscape] lobby, but I was too shy to talk to anyone. So I’m just like standing in the lobby. It was pretty embarrassing. I was just sort of standing there trying to see if there’s someone I could talk to and then I just couldn’t, I couldn’t… I was too scared to talk to anyone. So then I left.”

Space X, the rocket company that Musk established in 2002, almost became bankrupt early. In the International  Astronautical Congress (IAC) conference in Adelaide, Australia in 2017 Musk declared “A lot of people really only heard of Space X relatively recently, they may think Falcon 9 and Dragon just instantly appeared and that’s how it always was. But it wasn’t.”

“I messed up the first three launches. The first three launches failed. And fortunately, the fourth launch — which was, that was the last money that we had for Falcon 1 — that fourth launch worked. Or it would have been — that would have been it for SpaceX. But fate liked us that day. So, the fourth launch worked.”

Musk is co-founder and CEO of Tesla. Tesla is an electric vehicle company. Tesla was founded on July 1, 2003 by engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. Elon Musk joined the company in February 2004 as an investor and became the largest shareholder, eventually holding leadership roles including CEO and product architect. Musk is legally considered a co-founder of Tesla, even though he didn’t figure in the original founding team. Musk is associated with Tesla’s rise to prominence.

This business, too, was nearly bankrupt in 2008. “I have to tell you, like the most excruciating, hellish several months I have maybe ever had — and a lot of other people at Tesla — but I think we are getting there,” Musk once said at Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting in Mountain View, California.

According to BBC, Musk exhibited his talents for entrepreneurship early, going door-to-door with his brother selling homemade chocolate Easter eggs and creating his first computer game at the age of 12.

Contribution of Musk’s hardships to his current standing

Yahoo Finance says that it’s childhood and youth adversities that have toughened him, to become who he is now. “Elon Musk, has often credited his challenging upbringing with shaping his resilience and determination to tackle some of the world’s most formidable challenges.”

He reveres hardships to the extent that he regrets the fact that his children don’t almost know adversity. Despite his astounding success, according to Yahoo Finance, Musk harbors concerns about his children not undergoing the same level of adversity which he believes is vital for personal development. “One thing I worry about with my kids is they don’t face enough adversity.”

Yahoo Finance highlights that this worry underlines Musk’s belief in the value of defeating setbacks as a fundamental component of personal and professional growth. Resilience and lessons that Musk acquired throughout his youth adversities had strengthened and prepared him to grapple with any other future challenges.

In other words, hardships that he experienced in adulthood before climbing to his success reached him while he was already aware that no adversity exists forever. The hardships had developed in him the mindset of resilience because he had already grasped that every adversity finally ends. Moreover, he had discovered an optimal secret being that adversities don’t constitute a curse or an obstacle which occurs to incapacitate people to attain their dreams.

Yahoo Finance states “As Musk navigated his path from a struggling immigrant to a leading figure in technology and space exploration, the lessons learned from his childhood adversities played a crucial role.

As of 2024, with Musk being a father of 11, his concerns about his children’s exposure to adversity reflect his understanding of its role in shaping resilience and ambition. Despite his remarkable achievements, Musk’s reflections on his upbringing and its impact on his outlook on parenting highlight the complex interplay between adversity, ambition and the drive to change the world.”

Musk has fathered 11 children by different women, but one of the children has died. He has frequently talked about his desire to have a large family. He was born to a Canadian mother and a South African-born British father on 28 June 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa’s administrative capital.

While hardships strengthen you to face any other hurdles of the business fiercely, Entrepreneur says that the business world and hardships are generally inseparable. “Being a successful businessperson requires perseverance.

Whether you end up being the next Elon Musk or simply own a small business that supports your family, you are most likely going to face a string of hardships with successes in between before you finally breakthrough. This is normal. It’s the path most of us take. So it’s important to be prepared and mentally able to weather the storm.”

It adds that Musk once said “I will spend my last dollar on these companies. If we have to move into Justine’s parents’ basement, we’ll do it.” This quote underscores Musk’s dedication and resilience in pursuing his entrepreneurial goals, regardless of financial or personal challenges that he might suffer.

With “I will spend my last dollar on these companies”, he intended to underline his willingness to invest all of his financial resources into his companies, implying that he was prepared to risk everything to ensure their success. With “If we have to move into Justine’s parents’ basement, we’ll do it”, he wanted to emphasize upon his readiness to undergo significant personal sacrifices, including living in less-than-ideal conditions, to support his business endeavors. Justine is his ex-wife, her full name being Justine Musk. He employed the mention of moving into her parents’ basement, to underscore the extent of his commitment, even if it meant enduring personal hardships.

According to Entrepreneur, Antonio Gracias recalls a dinner with Musk during the 2008 financial crisis when Musk articulated the quotes. Commenting on the quotes, Brian T. Edmondson, Esq who wrote Entrepreneur’s May 25, 2018 story said “And that’s really what it takes. You can call it perseverance or grit. But the ability to stick with something, adjust your vision and move on when the going gets tough is one of the things that is common to every successful entrepreneur I’ve ever met.”

He recommends you certain areas to cultivate, for you to remain committed to your goal. “There are three things that I think really help to develop perseverance and resilience as an entrepreneur. First, you need to decide that you are going to make it happen and do whatever it takes. I know this sounds trite, but it’s important. The moment you start to doubt yourself and make an alternative ‘go back to work for someone else’ plan is the moment you start to lose your ability to make it through the tough times.”

“Secondly, you need to read books about other entrepreneurs. And these should include as many biographies as possible. A good biography will show you the journey that a successful businessperson took from point A to point B. And, it will show you all the obstacles they overcame to get there. This can help you to stick to it.”

The  third tactic entails networking with relevant people. “You need to find people who are where you want to be and connect with them. Join forums or groups, check out your local meetups, and find the masterminds in your industry. And then listen to the older and/or more experienced people. By seeing how they have overcome their own obstacles, you can help to set yourself up for success. There are many traits to successful entrepreneurs, but one of the most important is perseverance.”
