This article delves into why Stallone has performed such a bold move, and how his journey through apparently insurmountable hurdles has paved the way for his remarkable success. From his extremely challenging beginnings to becoming one of the greatest actors of all time, Stallone’s story boasts ultimate resilience and determination. This article aims to inspire you, showing you how Stallone’s perseverance and refusal to settle for less has brought him incredible success, energizing you to overcome your own obstacles and reach your goals.

Stallone’s incredible odds which he was obliged to overcome

Before becoming a Hollywood icon and action star, Stallone found himself compelled to grapple with seemingly insurmountable adversities which began as soon as he arrived on this planet. He was born on the 6th July 1946 in New York in the United States of America.

According to Eyewitness News ABC, an accident during Stallone’s childbirth left a part of his face and tongue paralyzed, providing him with his distinctive snarled expression and slurred speech.

This quote from Eyewitness News ABC’s text shows some of Stallone’s hardships regarding what he dreamed of as a career. “An outcast his entire life, Stallone saw acting as an outlet, though his face and voice were factors in his constant rejection for [acting] roles.”

Who always laughed at my jokes, and put up with my moods, and… loved me for who I was!” These words also indicate that the outcast status eventually ceased.

Though this media house calls Stallone an outcast for his entire life, all this changed immediately after his life was also revolutionized. Yet it is true that he was an outcast, before he transformed his life.

El País’s 3 March 2023 article provides more details additionally corroborating the start of Stallone’s adversities. “In a forceps accident, the doctor who delivered him inadvertently cut his facial nerve, leaving his lip, chin and half of his tongue partially paralyzed for life. That injury caused a speech impediment, which made him vulnerable to the neighborhood bullies. They made fun of his looks, his voice and even his name; to ridicule him, they called him ‘Sylvia.’”

From his residential community to even his close family members except at least his mother, Jackie Stallone, Stallone never secured any support during his youth. His father, Frank Stallone bore anger management issues. Jackie Stallone once said “He [Frank] was the most sadistic man God has ever allowed on this earth. He would whip Sylvester with a polo crop until he bled.”

But the worst mistreatment which Stallone endured from his father was not physical, according to El País. He always tormented him that he would mean nothing great to himself “Why can’t you be smarter? You’ll never be anything, you’re born with paralysis. Why don’t you join the Navy? You’ll never make it in school.” This has generated a disastrous impact on Stallone so that one of his father’s cruelest phrases eventually crept into the Rocky film script which he developed. The phrase is “You were born without much brain, so you better start using your body.”

His mother, suspecting that her son possessed a special hidden talent, took him to a guidance counselor for advice on a future career for her son. The response was disheartening too. The counselor said “Your son is suited to run a sorting machine or to be an assistant electrician, primarily in the area of elevator operations.”

But Stallone harbored other plans. As mentioned, Stallone experienced keen interest in the profession of acting. He began his acting career in 1969 in New York City and later in Hollywood. At this time, Stallone was grappling with the worst type of poverty. “In the early 1970s, Stallone was often destitute, and even homeless, while struggling to find work,” points out Eyewitness News ABC.

The following words from Stallone’s Instagram account highlight his living conditions of abject poverty in the 1970s. “1971…  Since we’re on the subject of ‘man’s best friend’ this is myself and Butkus as a puppy.  We were both, thin, hungry and living in a flophouse above a subway stop,  I used to say this apartment had ‘hot and cold running roaches’ anyway there was not much to do except spend time with each other and that’s where I started to learn the craft of screenwriting. Since I never went out, I relied on his companionship, and actually it was his idea to write Rocky, but don’t tell anyone….

Stallone paid a heartfelt tribute to his dog Butkus on Instagram, saying “When I was 26, totally broke, going nowhere VERY fast… I had my dog, BUTKUS, my best friend…”

“Years later when things got even worse, I had to sell him for $40 in front of a 7-Eleven store, because I couldn’t afford food, then like a modern day miracle, the screenplay for Rocky sold, and I could buy and buy him back, but the new owner knew I was desperate and charged me $ 15000. He was worth every penny!

Huge puzzle on Stallone and his tactic to solve it

You have already learnt that besides Stallone’s destitution and other hardships, his birth fate had already harmed him, impairing his speaking ability to some extent, among others. A person in this state of things cannot normally expect to play films. How has it come to pass for Stallone not to be discouraged and what has emboldened him to believe an impossible thing?

As also said, the accident during the birth has caused him a distinctive snarled expression and slurred speech. This also raises curiosity on how he has managed to defeat this adversity which actually carried high chances to dishearten him. Before addressing the curiosity, Life In Humanity is going to explain the adversity.

A distinctive snarled expression typically describes a facial look characterized by a wrinkled brow, bared teeth, or a generally displeased or angry appearance. This kind of expression can convey frustration, anger, or discomfort.

Slurred speech refers to the way words are pronounced unclearly or with a lack of precision, often blending together. This can also be caused  by a variety of factors including exhaustion, intoxication, or certain medical conditions. Together, these descriptions might indicate a person who is struggling with their speech and facial expressions due to emotional or physical challenges.

Bared teeth” means uncovered or exposed teeth like while a person is laughing because the latter one pulls the lips back. However, it does not signify that Stallone’s teeth are always exposed. Nobody can even argue that Stallone speaks with difficulty either. Yet, his face must be associated with a scowl or grimace. A scowl is a facial expression characterized by a furrowing of the brow and a frown. It often indicates anger, disapproval, or annoyance. A grimace is a facial expression that typically shows discomfort, pain, or distaste. It often involves twisting or contorting the face, including wrinkling the nose, curling the lips, or showing teeth.

When things got even worse I had to sell him for $40 in front of a 7-Eleven store, because I couldn’t afford food.”

It is true that Stallone possesses a distinctive way of speaking, which includes a slightly slurred speech and a recognizable drawl. The partial paralysis has afforded him a unique voice and manner of speaking. Nevertheless, this doesn’t typically prevent him from communicating effectively. A drawl is a manner of speaking in which the speaker elongates the vowel sounds and speaks more slowly than usual.

It might seem rational to think that Sylvester Stallone’s slurred speech and distinctive snarled expression could have dissuaded him from pursuing an acting career, especially in an industry often valuing conventional speech and appearance. These challenges could have been viewed as significant obstacles.

Notwithstanding, to surmount his hurdles, this man has employed an invincible secret. His insatiable hunger for success, perseverance and belief in his potential outweighed these hardships which were weighing upon him penetratingly, in addition to his unbelievable hard work. So, you also have to apply the same tactic, if you aspire to accomplish your noble goal.

Instead of being dissuaded, he embraced his unique characteristics and turned them into strengths that set him apart. His distinctive voice and appearance became trademarks that contributed to his success, particularly in acting roles that emphasized resilience and toughness.

This supports what some of the wealthiest people on this planet have always stated. They contend that for you to achieve unusual success, you have to think so unusually that it sounds abnormal to most of those around you. In other words, you have the mindset of extraordinary success, if normal people consider your plans, ambition, thoughts and dreams abnormal, foolish, irrational and impossible or too ambitious.

It is this mindset which permits people to be highly successful, remaining encouraged, motivated and inspired throughout their life. It’s the same mindset that has kept Stallone zealous and emboldened to accomplish the impossible — thus, never be desperate, work hard and wait patiently.

Stallone’s unexpected life transformation

According to El País, it’s childhood rejection and bullying which have inspired the legendary actor to create the film ‘Rocky’. While most people are usually disheartened by adversities, people who are to be incredibly successful like Stallone are instead strengthened by their adversities. Stallone extracted some of the content of the script from his own experience, a key reason for which he quickly produced it as you will see.

Stallone’s hardships touched him so profoundly that he felt obliged to conduct every endeavor for him to triumph over them. This is the right resolution that you should adopt and execute, if you are struggling with any hardship instead of permitting it to destroy you.

Beware that all starts in your mind. Whatever your mind trusts as true will manifest itself physically. In other words, it will materialize. If your mind believes that you will assuredly succeed exceptionally, you will eventually do so. For your information, all things- both bad like wars and hatred or jealousy and good like technologies and inventions- begin in men and women’s minds. Thus, don’t consent for your mind to believe that you will never become a success.

It was on March 24th 1975 when Stallone witnessed boxing heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali get knocked down by underdog Chuck Wepner that he was inspired to the highest extent. He was then maximally inspired to write a screenplay on another underdog, Rocky Balboa. In just three days, he wrote the 90-page Rocky Balboa film. “The writing came easily because that tale of heroes facing their own destiny was also his own story.

The film’s storyline came to Stallone as if by magic after he saw a fight between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner, a boxer who counted his fights by knockouts. When he was on the verge of retiring, Wepner had the opportunity to face the legendary champion, an unequal battle in which he even managed to put Ali on the mat once, much to the astonishment of the spectators. He locked himself in his house and wrote. Wepner became Rocky Balboa, so named after boxer Rocky Marciano and Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa,” says El País.

Stallone once said “I was watching the fight, and what I saw was pretty extraordinary. I saw a man called ‘The Bayonne Bleeder’ fight the greatest fighter who ever lived. And for one brief moment, this supposed stumblebum turned out to be magnificent. And he lasted and knocked the champ down. I thought if this isn’t a metaphor for life, and I said to myself ‘Let’s talk about stifled ambition and broken dreams and people who sit on the curb looking at their dreams go down the drain.’

Meanwhile, he had been renting a cheap apartment in Manhattan and started to frequent theaters. He performed his debut playing a minotaur in the only play Picasso had written. He wished to be an actor, but he craved to be a screenwriter even more. He once declared “A writer creates work for 300 people and entertainment for three million, so who is the most important person in a movie?

He adopted and implemented radical measures of hard work to be able to perform to his utmost capacities, according to El País. “He painted the windowpanes in his home black so he wouldn’t know if it was night or day, cut off his phone and lights, and wrote doggedly by candlelight. By the time he finished Rocky, he had already written a dozen other scripts.”

Stallone’s incredible story around the Rocky script

According to Forbes, Stallone received a casting call for an acting role and on the way out, he talked to the producers about the Rocky script. They asked him to bring it later. At this time, Stallone had only appeared in ‘The Lords of Flatbush’ in 1974, an independent film about a Brooklyn street gang. These producers, Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff, saw it and were thrilled, believing that it was the handsome blonde with a square jaw- Perry King- who had produced the script.

Nevertheless, their illusion was smashed, when they knew that Stallone, a dark-haired beefcake, was the one who had developed it. The producers were actually disappointed to learn that it was Stallone who had written the script, since they didn’t wish him to play the main character, Rocky. However, Stallone reached them with a single condition: the screenwriter would also play the main character.

The producers warned that they would only shoot the film, if Ryan O’Neal played the titular role, and Forbes says “You can’t blame them [the producers]. Stallone was an unknown actor at the time and other Hollywood types would be a much safer bet at the box office. Stallone was an unknown actor struggling to live in New York. They were looking at Ryan O’Neil, Burt Reynolds, and others to play Rocky Balboa.

The producers first offered Stallone $180,000, for him to stay home. This sum was a staggeringly irresistible deal for a person who only owned $106 in his bank account, and whose wife was pregnant with their first child (Sage who unfortunately deceased in 2012). Furthermore, he had sold his dog Butkus because he couldn’t afford to take care of him. Nevertheless, Stallone refused the amount.

Aware of the potential of the goodhearted fable in which boxing served as a backdrop, the producers were compelled to raise their offer to $360,000. Again, Stallone rejected it. “I told my wife that I’d rather bury it in the back yard and let the caterpillars play Rocky. I would have hated myself for selling out, the way we hate most people for selling out. My wife agreed, and said she’d be willing to move to a trailer in the middle of a swamp if need be,’” he told The New York Times.

There is a certain reason which acted like an impetus that was forcing him not to accept the deal, unless he was to play the main role. It is noticeable in these words “I thought, ‘You know what? You’ve got this poverty thing down. You really don’t need much to live on.’ I sort of figured it out. I was in no way used to the good life. So I knew in the back of my mind that if I sell this script and it does very very well, I’m going to jump off a building if I’m not in it. There’s no doubt in my mind. I’m going to be very, very upset. So this is one of those things, when you just roll the dice and fly by the proverbial seat of your pants and you just say, ‘I’ve got to try it. I’ve just got to do it. I may be totally wrong, and I’m going to take a lot of people down with me, but I just believe in it.’”

The producers finally accepted the script and let Stallone act as the leading character. But they drastically reduced the offer from $360 000 to $35 000; which he delightedly accepted provided that he was the main character.

Rocky film: great starting point for Stallone’s transformation

As soon as Stallone finished playing the Rocky film, he’d just become an action star. However, the studio produced the film reluctantly, and didn’t actually want to make it since they didn’t trust that Stallone acting as the main character would be fortunate for them. Besides, the producers did not employ the entire Rocky script, they only used one third.

The film grossed $225 million and received ten Oscar nominations. Stallone himself received two nominations, turning him into only the third actor after Charles Chaplin and Orson Welles to be nominated in both the screenplay and acting categories. On the night of the Academy Awards, Stallone’s film competed with Taxi Driver, All the President’s Men and Network, but the name Jack Nicholson announced when he opened the envelope was Rocky. Rocky also won Best Editing and Best Director Academy Awards.

Stallone didn’t take home any Oscars himself, but he was the night’s big winner. “He had finally been able to prove himself in front of everyone,” El País.

According to National World’s November 2023 article, Stallone is one of the biggest action movie stars of all time. He features among the 20 richest actors of all time and his staggering net worth is estimated at 400 million US dollars.
