Our article investigated why we fear failure, while various prominent personalities with a significant amount of hardships but who eventually overcame them affirm that those who dare to fail immensely are they that achieve immense success in life. In the article, we promised that we would come back to this subject, focusing on these following points:
- What if the very thing we dread is the thing we need to seek out?
- The strange yet undeniable truth: the greater your failures, the greater your potential to achieve greatness
What if the very thing we dread is the thing we need to seek out?
Failure fuels long-term success. The courage to fail constitutes a hallmark of all great leaders, innovators, and achievers. It requires the ability to look at failure not as a reflection of personal inadequacy but as a challenge to be faced head-on. Those who dare to fail greatly understand that failure is not an endpoint but a temporary setback, one that can be overcome with perseverance, learning, and resilience.

The late Walt Disney, for example, faced rejection and failure countless times before creating Disneyland— a global symbol of innovation and creativity. Early in his career, he was fired from a newspaper for lacking imagination and was told that his ideas were unworthy. Rather than succumbing to the fear of failure, Disney persisted, continuously refining his vision and daring to take risks. His eventual success acts as a testament to his willingness to embrace failure as a stepping stone.
The courage to fail greatly also involves accepting that failure is not always within our control. In a world of uncertainty, even the best-laid plans can go awry. Yet, the key lies in the response to these setbacks. Those who fear failure avoid taking the risks that could lead to greatness, while those who embrace it use failure as a tool for growth. Rather than viewing failure as something to fear, we can choose to see it as an inevitable part of the process of achieving something worthwhile.
It’s important to recognize that the fear of failure often stems from the fear of judgment. In many cultures, failure is viewed as a personal flaw or inadequacy, rather than a natural part of life’s journey. Shifting our perspective on failure is essential for overcoming this fear. By accepting that failure is a universal experience shared by everyone, we can begin to free ourselves from the paralyzing effects of fear.
In essence, the courage to fail greatly is about reframing failure as an opportunity, not a setback. It includes daring to take risks and understanding that the path to greatness is rarely a straight line. Instead, it’s a winding road full of detours, obstacles, and, yes, failures. But each failure constitutes a lesson learned, a step toward greater achievement.
While failure can be discouraging in the moment, it is through the process of failing greatly that we acquire the skills, knowledge, and resilience needed for long-term success. Achieving greatness is not a result of avoiding failure, but of learning how to overcome it and continue moving forward with renewed purpose.
The greatest achievers understand that success is not a destination, but a journey. They recognize that each failure along the way contributes to their growth and development. Success, therefore, is not just about the outcome, but about the journey itself and lessons learned along the way.
Take the example of Oprah Winfrey, whose early life was marked by a series of failures, rejections, and hardships. She faced numerous obstacles, including being fired from her first television job and enduring personal challenges. However, instead of letting these failures define her, Winfrey used them as fuel to continue pursuing her dreams. Her persistence and ability to learn from her failures ultimately led her to become one of the most influential media moguls in the world.

Similarly, in the world of sports, athletes like Michael Jordan and Serena Williams have experienced failure, rejection, and defeat throughout their careers. Yet, it was their ability to learn from these setbacks, improve their skills, and persist in the face of adversity that propelled them to the top of their respective fields. Their success was not thwarted by their failures, but instead they contributed massively to it.
The rewards of great achievement are not simply the accolades or recognition we receive, but the transformation we undergo as individuals. Each failure we encounter builds our character, strengthens our resolve, and deepens our understanding of what is truly important. Success becomes not just a measure of what we accomplish, but a reflection of who we become in the process.
Great achievement, then, is a combination of vision, perseverance, and the willingness to fail greatly. It requires embracing failure as an inevitable part of the journey and using it as a catalyst for growth. The most successful people in history are not those who avoided failure, but those who dared to fail greatly and, in doing so, unlocked their full potential.
Failure, though often feared, is the most powerful teacher, revealing weaknesses, refining skills, and fostering resilience in ways that success alone cannot. It pushes us beyond our comfort zones, forcing us to adapt, innovate, and grow, making future success more sustainable and meaningful. By seeking out failure—not recklessly, but as part of ambitious pursuits—we embrace a mindset of continuous learning, where setbacks become stepping stones toward mastery and fulfillment.
Furthermore, cultivating a mindset that embraces failure is crucial because avoiding it entirely is unrealistic—every great success story includes setbacks along the way. Instead of fearing failure, we should see it as an inevitable and valuable part of growth, allowing us to learn, adjust, and ultimately achieve greater success. By seeking it out in this sense, we acknowledge that failure is not the opposite of success but often a necessary step toward it.
The strange yet undeniable truth
The greater your failures, the greater your potential to achieve greatness. Failure represents a paradox, especially when you don’t know that embracing risk leads to growth. Failure—as already suggested— is generally seen as something to avoid, an undesirable outcome that should be prevented at all costs. In cultures where success is idolized and failure is stigmatized, it can be difficult to understand how failure could ever result in greatness. However, when we view failure not as an endpoint but as a step along the journey, its role in success becomes clearer and colossal.

Failure is, in fact, an essential part of the learning process. Every major achievement in human history has been accompanied by multiple failures, each teaching valuable lessons, revealing flaws, and offering new insights that ultimately lead to success. This paradox—where failure becomes the stepping stone to success—is central to the idea that “only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly,” as Robert F. Kennedy once said. The article mentioned at the very beginning contains more about him.
Consider the story of the late Thomas Edison who famously failed thousands of times before inventing the electric light bulb. Instead of regarding each failure as a defeat, Edison viewed them as opportunities for growth. He famously said “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Edison’s determination to fail greatly, learning from each failure, eventually led to a monumental achievement that has transformed the whole world. For more about Edison, you can read Never let jealousy dominate you: Edison and Ford’s lifelong and unimaginable partnership that benefited both and If you wholeheartedly believe your idea, cling on to it.
Similarly, in the realm of business, entrepreneurs owe their success to their willingness to fail and learn from their mistakes. The late Steve Jobs, for instance, was ousted from Apple— the company that he’d founded, only to return years later and lead it to unprecedented heights. His journey was marked by failure, but it was through those failures that he honed his vision, learned critical lessons, and emerged with a clear understanding of how to revolutionize technology. His unswerving willingness to fail greatly ultimately paved the way for one of the most successful businesses in the world.
These stories highlight the crucial role failure plays in growth which is not even ordinary—but just extraordinary. It forces individuals to confront their weaknesses, refine their strategies, and rethink their approach. The ability to fail greatly and yet persevere is what separates those who achieve greatness from those who play it safe and never reach their full potential.
Failure also fosters innovation. When there arise no guarantees of success, individuals and organizations are compelled to think outside the box, take risks, and push boundaries in ways they might not otherwise consider. The necessity of finding new solutions to overcome failures often results in breakthroughs that revolutionize the course of industries, societies, and lives.
In this sense, failure does not constitute the opposite of success but a fundamental component of the process. Those unwilling to fail greatly will never know the true depths of their potential. It is in the midst of failure that we discover what we are truly capable of accomplishing.
Fear of failure can be crippling, preventing individuals from pursuing their goals or from taking bold actions that could lead to tremendous success. It causes people to play it safe, to follow established paths rather than forging new ones. However, the key to achieving greatness lies in overcoming this fear and embracing failure as a necessary part of the journey. History has shown that the most extraordinary achievements are often the result of stepping into the unknown and risking failure.
Failure—a powerful tool for growth and innovation

Robert F. Kennedy’s powerful assertion that “only those who dare to fail greatly, can ever achieve greatly” highlights a fundamental truth about success: it is not the absence of failure that leads to greatness, but the courage to risk it. In a world that often idolizes success while demonizing failure, it is essential to remember that true achievement comes not from avoiding failure, but from embracing it as a part of the process.
Failure is not something to be feared or avoided—it is a powerful tool for growth and innovation. By daring to fail greatly, we open ourselves to the possibility of achieving something truly extraordinary. The path to greatness is not without its challenges, but it is through those challenges that we discover what we are truly capable of.
Call-to-action
Embrace the power of failure and transform it into your stepping stone toward greatness. Don’t let fear hold you back from the incredible potential that lies on the other side of risk. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, creator, or leader, the most extraordinary achievements are often the result of daring to fail greatly.
Take the first step today. Challenge yourself to embrace failure, learn from it, and watch how it propels you toward success. Share your story, take risks, and remember—failure is not a setback, but a vital part of your journey to greatness.
Are you ready to dare greatly?

Very good blog! Do you have any recommendations for aspiring writers? I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any ideas? Kudos!
Thank you so much for your kind words! For aspiring writers looking to start a blog, I would strongly recommend paying for a web designer to develop your site through WordPress, as that’s the route I’ve taken. It really helps you to create a more professional and unique appearance. A paid plan also offers more customization, better support, and more control over your content. While there exist free platforms available, investing in a paid option early on can furnish you with a solid foundation for growth. It may seem overwhelming at first, but having a good setup from the start can create a big difference in the long run. Best of luck with your blog!
